How to Layer and Style Your Bed Like An Interior Designer

One of the ultimate luxuries when it comes to bedrooms is always the quality of the bedding that you select. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through the process of layering your bed like an interior designer.

How to layer and style your bed like an interior designer:

  1. Mattress
  2. Sheets
  3. Quilt or Coverlet
  4. Duvet or Comforter
  5. Throw
  6. Pillows

Mattress

The foundation of a luxurious bed starts with a high-quality mattress. Selecting a mattress is truly based on personal preference. Rather than recommend a certain brand, we suggest you go and try out different types to find the best fit for you. You can also look into custom made mattresses like many of our clients have done.

Tip! Don’t forget the mattress pad. Select one that aligns with your preferences, whether you prefer a softer feel, more firmness, or cooling properties–it can make a significant difference in the comfort of your mattress.

Sheets

Choose sheets made from premium materials like Egyptian cotton or high-thread-count blends. Here at Kirkendall Design, we typically opt for a neutral palette or a soft, calming color that matches your bedroom’s aesthetic.

Quilt or Coverlet

Add a quilt or coverlet as your base layer for warmth and style. We suggest this piece of bedding be washable and a medium weight fabric.

Duvet or Comforter

This is the “cherry on top” of how to create a bed like an interior design. Choose a luxurious duvet for added comfort and texture. Experiment with down comforters, duvet covers, or bed scarves, sometimes referred to as “nap blankets.”

Throw

Finish the bed layering with a carefully chosen throw. We use throws and pillows as a way to add in more color and texture to make your bed feel even more cozy.

Pillows

The sizes and number of pillows you should incorporate will differ based on the size of the bed. To layer your bed like an interior designer, follow our pillow layering formula below.

  • King: 3 euros, 2 king shams, 1 accent pillow or bolster
  • Queen: 2 euros, 2 standard shams and 1 accent pillow
  • Full:  2 standard shams, 3 accent pillows
  • Twin: 1 king or euro sham, 1 accent pillow

Experiment with different pillow types, including euros, shams, bolsters, and accent pillows. Find more inspiration on our Pinterest – the possibilities are endless!

Tip! We love using custom pillows from Little Design Co. based in Tulsa, OK.

Weather Aware

Lastly, think about using different layers and materials for each season, such as velvets and sateens for winter warmth. This will not only help keep you comfortable, but the different textures will add visual interest to the room. If you want to use patterns, remember less is more!
