Custom Storage & Wine Displays: Designing a Home Around the Way You Live

Custom kitchen cabinetry designed by Kirkendall Design, a Tulsa interior design firm, with thoughtful storage for everyday living and entertaining.

When we design a home, we’re always thinking about how our clients actually live, gather, and entertain. For us, it’s never about adding storage just for the sake of storage. How you use the space directly impacts the design.

Maybe that’s a custom built-in in the dining room for serving pieces, a beverage station off a sitting area, or a wine display. These details are about more than just cabinetry and storage. They’re about making it easier to gather with the people you love and enjoy your home to the fullest.

Custom Storage

Custom cabinetry in kitchens, butler’s pantries, and dining rooms is an important part of how we think about the home. Rather than simply finding a place to put things, we look at how our clients use their spaces and consider how thoughtful design can make everyday life easier.

We’re seeing more of our clients want storage that works hard and is customized for the way they actually live. It might be an additional drawer within a drawer, with the larger drawer holding pots and pans and the smaller one keeping lids organized. Or it could be a dedicated spot for dog bowls built right into the kitchen island—giving them a designated place while keeping them tucked away.

We’ve also had clients plan their kitchen organization around the specific things they use every day. One client, for example, wants to make sure there’s a place for her favorite spices, so we’re designing the drawers around the actual size of what she needs to store. There are even newer cabinetry options that make everyday tasks easier, like hands-free trash can openings.

These are small details, but they’re the things that make a home work better. When storage is designed around the way you live, it just makes life easier.

Wine Displays

A wine collection doesn’t always need to be tucked away. A wine display can be a beautiful part of the room, whether it’s incorporated into a dining room, tucked into a butler’s pantry, or given its own dedicated wine closet.

For one of our current clients, we’re incorporating a wine cooler tower into the scullery. They originally considered placing it in the main kitchen, but didn’t have the space—and the scullery turned out to be the perfect solution.

This is where thoughtful design can make all the difference. Instead of forcing a feature into a space, we look at the home as a whole and find the right place for it to function naturally within the way our clients live and entertain.

We love finding ways to make these spaces both beautiful and practical, using cabinetry, lighting, glass, and finishes that feel like they belong in the home.

At Kirkendall Design, we believe good design should feel personal. Our goal is to create livable luxury that reflects your story, supports the way you live, and gives you a home that feels as good to use as it is to look at.
